[You know what's terrible?

Basically everything that just happened.

Sousei needs some time--both to perform first aid on Steph and to make sure things aren't totally insane and everyone isn't losing their minds here--but eventually he does go to find Fane.

Mostly because Fane seems like the most logical of all of them and he needs to know What Happened.

(It says a lot that the skeleton comes across as the most logical, but he is tiredly accepting this into his heart as Truth.)

[ Fane is probably just chillin after all that excitement, which in his case, means hanging out at... the tailor? It at least immediately makes sense why, since he’s pulled a light but rough fabric from the selection and is currently writing on it. It’s definitely working better than napkins. His wrist definitely still looks odd though, since that crack is just constantly emitting a very lightly glowing mist. ]

Hm? [ He looks up from his writing, and since it’s Sousei, he beckons him in with little complaint. ] Ah, yes, come in. I’m sure you have questions.

I do, yes.

[no point in denying that! But also, that wrist...crack.... is definitely a little alarming.]

... Are you all right?

[He has to ask that first, eyebrow arched.]

Hm. Well, relatively speaking.

[ Fane takes a moment to look at his wrist, but then shrugs ]

I was quite concerned at first, as I've not had an "injury" linger as long as this one surely will, but... Focusing on it, I'm not losing my Source. So it's at least no danger. [ Not that the explanation will make much sense to Sousei. He sighs. ]

If you come across any poison, do send it my way.

[Oh my god.]

For some reason, yes. I hardly understand it myself, mind you, but for whatever reason, poison seems to do wonders for the undead.

[ He shrugs, then shakes his head ]

[He has no idea what that means either but.

[ You know, Fane appreciates this about Sousei. He's very direct and to the point, and for the resident impatient skeleton, he considers that a major positive. ]

Well, it's not nearly as interesting as it looked, I imagine.

[ He shrugs, then sighs heavily ]

I was walking through the castle when a door suddenly appeared, which I very much felt compelled to go through. I met Stephanie inside, and we were... Well, I shall just say "tasked" for the sake of simplicity with carrying a lantern to its destination. Along a meandering path we go until we meet a shape-shifting abomination whose face I had to remove two times. But we survived, and the contents of the chest we could have received were quite uselessly broken.

[......... Well then. That's. That's a lot.

(Had to remove the face of, really? That's brutal, but also fair. Like. If you gotta, you gotta.)]

How did she receive her injuries?

[ There's a mild pause, but he admits with a slightly less haughty tone: ]

Helping me. When its face came off the second time, it, well, exploded a bit. The ice punctured her limbs.

[ He sighs and shakes his head ]

I don't believe it's an exagerration to say that without the Face Ripper, she may not have made it out. Perhaps the same could be said for me, but dying is obviously more complicated.

Do you know what happened to the others? Natsuo, and the others who went in?

I've no idea. I had no idea there was anyone else until they fell on us both.

[ Fane and Steph were the first ones to go, so. He's useless. ]

And you say you were compelled to do it in an odd sort of way?

[ He nods, and his voice does grow a bit troubled here. ]

...Unfortunately so. It's an unpleasant experience to have your priorities altered in such a way. [ He sighs, then adds: ] But yes, as soon as the door appeared, there was nothing on my mind but going through it. It was quite similar with the flame. All that was important was keeping it alight.

[...Yeah... he doesn't like that either.]

They can tweak our very intentions and priorities...

Why do they even bother with the farce of this entire "game" to begin with?

I ask myself the very same question every day. Why not just call it an Arena and be honest? If we're supposed to fight to the death, then by the Void, let's at least not waste time with it. I have things to do, as does everyone else, I'm sure.

...Obviously I would prefer to avoid all possible unnecessary death, but... yes, they are clearly forcing us into these situations, so there is no point in pretending as though this is out of our free will as some sort of "game".

Well, yes, I'm sure we'd all like to avoid murder if at all possible, but so far, that seems like a somewhat foregone conclusion.

[ Fane's self-righteous annoyance at least quickly simmers down. He Hates This Place and will tell anyone that listens, but he's also aware enough that not everyone cares as much as he does. So with a another sigh (but smaller), he nods. ]

Of course. I'm not in the habit of keeping valuable information to myself. [ He shrugs ] Though as you imply, there's not much to this one.

I am trying to find a common thread between the objectives we have been assigned. I am aware it may be incriminating knowledge, so you do not have to offer it up, but I would like to know what it is your objective is.

I do not have full disclosure to share the remainder; not without permission. However, I can say that they range as far as simply "dying" as an objective, to being the one to execute others in that farce of an execution.

[ Fane makes a discontent noise, so clearly, the partial explanation isn't satisfying to him, but he doesn't complain about it directly. Instead, he takes a different nosy stance. ]

My objective is apparently to kill another person by stabbing them in the back--metaphorically or physically, I am not entirely certain. Presumably because they are aware just how distasteful I would find such a thing.
